Iran’s Missile Strike on Israeli Air Base Leaves at Least 33 CrateredRunways

Satellite imagery reveals the extent of damage inflicted on Israel’sNevatim Air Base following a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles on October 1st. Analysis of the images, captured on October 2nd, reveals at least 33 craters within the base, according to The War Zone, a US-based defense news website.

The attack, which saw approximately 180 missileslaunched towards Israeli targets, marked a significant escalation from a similar incident in April. While a majority of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, a substantial number successfully penetrated the defenses, a stark contrast to the earlier attackwhere only a few missiles breached the system.

Iran claimed the missiles targeted critical Israeli military installations, including the Mossad headquarters, air defense radar facilities, and two key air bases: Nevatim and Tel Nof.

The War Zone notes that Nevatim Air Base houses Israel’s high-value F-35I fighter jets and electronic warfare aircraft.

While the extent of damage to the F-35Is remains unclear, the satellite imagery suggests significant damage to the base’s infrastructure.

DeckerEveleth, a strategic analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), a US non-profit research and analysis organization, observed at least 33 craters at the base, with the possibility of more obscured by cloud cover. He estimates the total number of craters created by the Iranian missiles could be close to 40.

Eveleth noted a concentration of craters around areas like the runway and fighter jet hangars, with one hangar seemingly destroyed by a missile. However, he believes the overall damage inflicted by the Iranian missiles on Nevatim was not very effective.

Most of the missiles either missed their targets completely oronly hit the taxiways around the base, and most of the taxiways are already repaired, he stated. But they did hit a refueling hangar and several buildings.

Despite the limited damage, Eveleth highlights a concerning trend for Israel. He points to Iran’s growing missile arsenal, increasing accuracy, andenhanced counter-defense capabilities as escalating threats. The large-scale attack also provides valuable data for Iran to refine its long-range strike systems.

The successful penetration of Israel’s missile defense system by a significant number of Iranian missiles raises questions about its effectiveness. The scale of the attack on Nevatim suggests adegree of vulnerability in Israel’s defenses, which requires further analysis and potential adjustments.

This incident underscores the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, highlighting the potential for further conflict in the region. The implications of this attack, including the potential impact on Israel’s military capabilities and the future trajectory of the regional conflict, remainto be fully assessed.
