Terence Tao, the UCLA professor hailed as the world’s greatestliving mathematician, isn’t sweating the rise of artificial intelligence. While acknowledging AI’s growing capabilities, Tao remains confident that mathematicians will always be needed, evenin a future increasingly dominated by advanced algorithms.

Last month, Tao compared ChatGPT’s reasoning model to a mediocre, but not completely incompetent graduate student. While the AI could solve complex analysis problems, it required a lot of hints and prodding, suggesting a lack of true understanding and adaptability.

In a recent interview with The Atlantic, Tao further emphasized the limitations of current AI models. One key difference between graduate students and AI is that graduate students learn, he explained. You tell an AI its approach doesn’t work, it apologizes, it will maybe temporarily correct its course, but sometimes it just snaps back to thething it tried before. This inability to truly learn and adapt, according to Tao, is a fundamental barrier to AI surpassing human mathematicians.

Instead of viewing AI as a threat, Tao envisions a future where AI and mathematicians collaborate. AI can be a powerful tool for mathematicians, he said, helping us toexplore new ideas and solve complex problems. He envisions AI assisting with tedious calculations, data analysis, and even generating new hypotheses, freeing up mathematicians to focus on the more creative and conceptual aspects of their work.

Tao’s perspective offers a reassuring message for aspiring mathematicians. While AI is undoubtedly revolutionizing various fields, it’s unlikely to replace the human element in mathematical research. The ability to think critically, adapt to new challenges, and develop innovative solutions remains uniquely human. As AI continues to evolve, it’s likely to become a valuable partner for mathematicians, enhancing their capabilities and pushing the boundaries of mathematical exploration.
