SEOUL — On September 25, 2024, senior officials from both South Korea and China convened in Seoul for a high-level maritime consultation. The meeting, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in various maritime-related fields, marked another step forward in the relationship between the two nations.

During the meeting, the Korean side expressed concerns over the significant increase in illegal fishing by Chinese vessels during the peak crab fishing season. They called on the Chinese side to take effective enforcement actions to address the issue. This concern reflects the ongoing tensions over maritime disputes and the need for greater cooperation and dialogue.

The consultation also included discussions on the upcoming third meeting of the bilateral dialogue and cooperation mechanism on maritime affairs. This mechanism, which was established to facilitate joint discussions on ocean-related matters, had its previous sessions in April 2021 and June 2022. The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining mutual respect for each other’s legitimate maritime rights and the need to adhere to international law in their interactions.
