News Content: On August 13, 2024, the 12th Haiyan Youth Festival was held in Fuzhou with great fanfare. This event, themed around the “Taiwan Students Reenact the Ancient Examination Path Study Camp,” attracted 54 young Taiwanese students and 20 Taiwanese youths residing in Fujian Province. The study camp, jointly organized by the Publicity and Propaganda Department of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (ACFOC), Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Fujian Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Henan Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and Fuzhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, aimed to enable Taiwanese youth to deepen their understanding of the historical trajectory of cross-strait historical exchanges and cultural integration by retracing the ancient examination path.
At the opening ceremony, Vice President Zheng Ping of the ACFOC stated that by tracing historical trajectories and experiencing daily customs and traditions, and feeling the “humanity” behind the exchange and fusion, the young people could inspire their aspirations and practice their love for their homeland and hometown. Zheng Ping emphasized that despite living in different regions, the bloodline and family affection are inherited and inseparable. He called on the young people from both sides of the strait to foster a deep sense of national unity and to understand the historical lineage of the multicultural unity of China, recognizing dialects and cherishing hometown feelings, and jointly leading cross-strait exchanges and interactions.
During the opening ceremony, guests and cross-strait youth watched a documentary that reviewed the journey of young Taiwanese students from 2018 onwards, retracing the path of Taiwanese scholars through the ancient examination system and seeking the roots of cross-strait culture. Additionally, Professor Mao Xiaoyang from the Humanities College of Minjiang University delivered a special lecture on the “Qing Dynasty Taiwan Gongyuan,” led the participants in wearing Hanfu, adjusting their attire, and performing a ritual of respect for the ancient sages; conducted an interactive experience of “Cloud-Traveling the Ancient Examination Path”; and held a simulated “civil service examination” to immerse participants in the culture of the imperial examinations.
This year’s study camp added a “Roots Journey” to Henan, where participants will visit Fujian, Beijing, and Henan to deepen their understanding and identification with Chinese culture. It is understood that since 2018, nearly 300 Taiwanese youth students have registered for this activity, making it one of the signature events of the Haiyan Youth Festival.
The successful hosting of the study camp not only deepened the understanding of traditional Chinese culture among cross-strait youth but also promoted exchanges and integration among the young people, injecting new vitality into the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
