China’s Digital Publishing Industry Surpasses 1.6 Trillion Yuan in 2023, Up Nearly 20% Year-on-Year

HAIKOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — The 14th China International Digital Publishing Expo opened in Haikou City on Thursday. During the event, the China Academy of Press and Publication (CAPP) unveiled its Annual Report on China’s Digital Publishing Industry 2023-2024 (hereafter referred to as the Report). According to the Report, the overall scale of China’s digital publishing industry reached 1617.968 billion yuan in 2023, marking a year-on-year increase of 19.08%.

Internet advertising, online games, online education, and digital music ranked the top four in terms of revenue, with internet advertising income exceeding 710 billion yuan and online game revenue surpassing 300 billion yuan.

The Report noted that digital publishing has become a significant channel for the promotion and dissemination of fine traditional Chinese culture. Themes and elements of traditional Chinese culture have become dominant in network literature, animation, online games, and other forms of online cultural expression.

In 2023, China’s online literature sector experienced further expansion in scale. By the end of December 2023, the number of online literature readers had reached a historical high of 537 million. The total number of online literature works exceeded 36 million, with approximately 2 million new works added annually. Guochao (National Tide) became the prevailing trend in online literature creation that year.

The Report also pointed out that in 2023, online literature, online games, and film and television served as the three major drivers of China’s cultural exports. The overseas sales revenue of Chinese self-developed online games reached 16.366 billion U.S. dollars. The overseas market scale of online literature exceeded 4 billion yuan, with nearly 200 million active overseas users, of which the Generation Z accounted for 80%.

Wei Yushan, President of the CAPP, stated that in 2023, AI (Artificial Intelligence) achieved full-process and full-chain application in China’s publishing industry. Looking ahead, AIGC (Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content) holds promising prospects in various fields and scenarios, including digital reading, animation, film and television, music, news, digital education, live streaming, social media, and conferences. However, the verification of information authenticity, reliability, and standardization will become increasingly important, and the construction of a global digital content collaboration system will be accelerated.
