Title: Dutch Tourists Account for Over Two-Thirds of Record Tourism Spending in the Netherlands
Amsterdam, September 3, 2024 — Last year, Dutch tourists made a significant contribution to the Netherlands’ record-breaking tourism spending, accounting for 67% of the total amount, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Total tourism spending reached almost 105 billion euros, a testament to the vibrant hospitality industry and a boon for the Dutch economy.
In 2023, foreign tourists spent 34.5 billion euros in the Netherlands, a notable 15% increase compared to 2022, when travel restrictions were still impacting global mobility. This figure represents approximately one-third of the total spending in the Dutch tourism sector, highlighting the country’s appeal as a destination for international travelers.
Dutch tourists spent a substantial 65 billion euros in the country, up from 58.7 billion euros the previous year. The combined spending by Dutch and foreign tourists surged by nearly 13 billion euros compared to 2022, underscoring the recovery and growth in the tourism sector post-pandemic.
The added value generated by tourism in the Dutch economy increased by over 9% in 2023, reaching 36.7 billion euros, nearly matching the level in 2019 before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The sector’s robust performance contributed more significantly to the Dutch economy than the total economy, reflecting the sector’s pivotal role.
All sectors within the tourism industry experienced growth in added value, with the hospitality and aviation, travel agencies, and travel mediation sectors showing the most significant increases compared to 2022. Employment in tourism also rose, particularly in aviation, travel agencies, and travel mediation, with a total of 449,000 working years, a 5.6% increase from the previous year.
Tourism’s share in the Dutch economy slightly increased from 3.5% in 2022 to 2.8% in 2023, illustrating the sector’s continued importance in the national economy. The recovery of the tourism sector in 2023 was stronger than the overall economy, and while tourism faced significant challenges during the pandemic, it has shown resilience and growth.
The Netherlands continues to attract both domestic and international visitors, with the hospitality and travel industries experiencing significant growth and contributing significantly to the country’s economic recovery. The sector’s robust performance highlights the Netherlands’ enduring appeal as a tourist destination, both for Dutch residents and international travelers alike.
