Guangzhou, August 6 (Xinhua Net, Li Xingyan) A message released by Guangdong Qifu Hospital on the same day reported that the hospital has successfully removed a congenital giant black nevus from the forehead of a two-and-a-half-year-old child, who is currently recovering well and has been discharged smoothly.

The child, named Lè Lè (pseudonym) from Huizhou, Guangdong Province, had a congenital nevus measuring about 10 cm * 14 cm covering nearly half of his scalp. According to Hu Zhiqi, the chief consultant of the plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery center at Guangdong Qifu Hospital and a director of the plastic surgery department, “Such congenital giant nevi may grow larger as the child ages, not only severely affecting appearance and making the child susceptible to odd looks and developing a sense of inferiority, but also having a certain rate of malignant transformation, requiring surgical removal.”

It is understood that melanocytic nevi are a type of pigmented nevi, which are benign tumors formed by the aggregation of nevus cells in a local area. They are characterized by a large area and widespread distribution, which severely affects appearance. The size and location of melanocytic nevi vary from person to person, and can generally be treated with a combination of laser therapy and surgery. However, for congenital giant nevi like Lè Lè’s, surgical removal is necessary.

Lè Lè, whose congenital giant melanocytic nevus is being treated at the hospital, was supplied by Guangdong Qifu Hospital.

“For a large melanocytic nevus on the forehead as in Lè Lè’s case, it is recommended to use a scalp skin expander in the first stage to fully expand the surrounding skin flap, and in the second stage to remove the entire nevus cells nevus in one operation, using the expanded skin flap to cover the wound. This approach can reduce the number of surgeries, alleviate the child’s pain, and preserve the function and appearance of the donor area as much as possible.” Professor Hu Zhiqi explained the surgical plan.

In mid-April, Lè Lè underwent the first stage of the scalp skin expander implantation surgery, followed by three months of skin flap nursing. In early July, the second stage surgery was performed, successfully removing the expander and the congenital melanocytic nevus in one operation, and using the skin flap to repair the excised wound.

Professor Hu Zhiqi said, “The skin flap transplanted is similar in color and texture to healthy skin, and can even grow hair. After complete recovery, it is almost impossible to see any difference with the naked eye.”

The successful case of Lè Lè not only brought about physical and psychological improvements, but also provided a professional treatment plan and hope for patients with similar conditions. The hospital stated that it will continue to focus on providing high-quality medical services to help more patients recover their health.
