Utrecht’s Jaarbeursplein Bicycle Shed Closed Due to Construction Cracks
Utrecht, Netherlands – The bustling bicycle shed at the Jaarbeursplein, located near Utrecht Central Station, will be closed indefinitely after cracks were discovered during a routine inspection. The municipality of Utrecht announced the closure on Friday, citingsafety concerns and the need for further investigation into the cause of the cracks.
The closure comes as a major inconvenience for cyclists who rely on the shed’s4,300 parking spaces. While the municipality has implemented a temporary pop-up bicycle parking facility with 1,000 spaces on the Jaarbeursplein, which will open on Monday, the long-termsolution remains unclear.
We understand this is very annoying for people who use the bicycle shed, but this is necessary as a precaution, said a municipal spokesperson. We hope for a quick solution.
The municipality has cordoned offa portion of the Stadsplateau, the pedestrian plaza above the bicycle shed, to relieve pressure on the roof. Cyclists are being directed to alternative parking facilities, including the Knoop parking facility on the west side of the Moreelsebrug and the large Stationsplein parking facility. The Knoop facility willnow remain open 24/7, with NS staff deployed to guide travelers to the various parking options.
This closure follows a series of recent issues with bicycle parking facilities in Utrecht. In recent months, some racks at the Jaarbeursplein have been out of order due to flooding. Two years ago, crackswere discovered in the floor of the Stationsplein bicycle shed, attributed to the expansion and contraction of concrete joints in response to temperature fluctuations. In early October, two smaller bicycle sheds at Utrecht Central Station were also closed for renovations.
Despite the recent closures, the municipal spokesperson maintains that there are enough sheds where people can parktheir bikes. However, the Jaarbeursplein closure highlights the growing strain on Utrecht’s bicycle infrastructure, particularly in the face of increasing cycling popularity.
The municipality has promised to keep the public updated on the Jaarbeursplein shed’s status and the timeline for its reopening.
