Xi Jinping Encourages Next Generation to Carry on Legacy of Ethnic Unity in Southwest China
Beijing, September 25, 2024 –Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, President of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, has sent aletter to the descendants of those who swore an oath of ethnic unity at the Pu’er Ethnic Unity Oath Monument in southwest China’s Yunnan province. In his letter, XiJinping expressed his warm encouragement and high hopes for the next generation.
Xi Jinping noted that in 1951, representatives from various ethnic groups, including the ancestors of the letter’s recipients, gathered at the monument and solemnly vowed tofollow the Party and work together in unity. The story of the Pu’er Ethnic Unity Oath Monument dates back to 1950, when representatives from various ethnic groups in the Pu’er Prefecture of Yunnan were invited to Beijing to participate in thecelebration of the first anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. They were warmly received by Mao Zedong and other Party and state leaders.
On New Year’s Day 1951, people of all ethnicities in the Pu’er Prefecture held a swearing-in ceremony.Following their traditional customs, they erected the oath monument, declaring their commitment to unite as one heart and one mind, stand together until the end, and under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, vow to strive for the construction of an equal, free, and happy family! Forty-eight representatives from various ethnic groupssigned their names on the monument.
