(hereafter referred to as the Shanghai Railway Bureau) has announced its transportation plan for the National Day holiday in 2024. According to the plan, the railway system in the Yangtze River Delta region is expected to transport over 34 million passengers during the holiday, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. The Shanghai Railway Bureau is preparing to meet the anticipated surge in passenger traffic by adding 196.5 extra trains to the regular schedule, in addition to the 80 peak period trains already in operation.
Peak Day Expected to Break Records
The National Day holiday, also known as the Golden Week, will officially commence on September 29 and conclude on October 8, 2024. The Shanghai Railway Bureau anticipates that the peak of passenger traffic will occur on October 1, with an estimated 3.8 million passengers expected to travel that day. This figure is poised to set a new record for the highest number of passengers transported in a single day by the Shanghai Railway Bureau.
Popular Destinations and Routes
Based on the current sales of train tickets, the railway system in the Yangtze River Delta is seeing a strong demand for travel during the National Day holiday. The demand for travel is driven by a mix of family visits, tourism, and students returning home. Intra-regional travel is also expected to be busy, with travelers frequently moving between Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Suzhou, Yangzhou, Yancheng, Nantong, Ningbo, Jinhua, Huangshan, and Wuhu.

The most in-demand routes during the holiday period include the Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Guangzhou, Hangzhou-Shenzhen, Shanghai-Kunming, Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Hangzhou, Nanjing-Hangzhou, Hefei-Fuzhou, Hefei-Hangzhou, Xuzhou-Lianyungang, Lianyungang-Zhenjiang, Chizhou-Huangshan, and Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed rail lines.

To accommodate the increased demand, the Shanghai Railway Bureau plans to operate more trains than in previous years, with a total of 45 additional pairs of trains scheduled compared to last year. This includes both long-distance and short-distance trains, ensuring that passengers have ample options for travel.
