Beijing, September 19, 2024 – A delegation of South Korean parliamentarians, representing the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship League, met with China’s Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), Zhao Leji, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing this morning.
During the meeting, Zhao Leji emphasized the strong and enduring relationship between China and South Korea, describing the two nations as irreplaceable neighbors and inseparable cooperative partners. He highlighted that the healthy and stable development of the China-South Korea relationship is in the mutual interest of both countries and is conducive to maintaining regional peace, security, and prosperity.
Zhao also expressed his hope that the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship League, as a key player in promoting China-South Korea relations, will play a positive role in fostering friendly exchanges and deepening practical cooperation between the two countries.
The South Korean delegation, which consists of over ten members, including the League’s president Kim Tai-yeon, began their three-day official visit to China the day before. During their stay, the delegation plans to hold talks with the China-Korea Friendship Group of the NPC to discuss proposals for strengthening bilateral diplomatic relations and promoting parliamentary exchange and cooperation.
The delegation previously met with China’s State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. Key members of the delegation include Kim Tai-yeon, the president of the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship League; Kim Seung-won, the first vice-president (of the National Power Party); Park Jeong, the permanent vice-president (of the Democratic Party of Korea); and Hong Ki-won, the secretary-general (of the Democratic Party of Korea).
Kim Tai-yeon, the president of the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship League, mentioned that Zhao Leji had made significant contributions to promoting practical cooperation between China and South Korea and had developed a deep bond with South Korea. He added that South Korean Speaker of the Parliament, Yoo Eun-hye, is considering visiting China to further boost the friendly relations between the two countries. If the visit is realized, Speaker Yoo is willing to engage in in-depth discussions with Zhao Leji on a range of cooperation topics between China and South Korea.
The visit of the South Korean parliamentary delegation comes at a time when both countries are working to strengthen their economic, political, and cultural ties. The meeting between Zhao Leji and the delegation is a clear indication of the importance the two countries place on maintaining and enhancing their strategic cooperative partnership.
