Lead:
Karl Iagnemma, the co-founder and CEO of Motional, the self-driving vehicle startup supported by Hyundai, has announced his departure from the company. Taking his place will be CTO Laura Major, who will serve as interim CEO while also retaining her current role as Chief Technology Officer.
Body:
The news of Iagnemma’s departure comes as Motional, which was established through a 2019 $4 billion joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, continues to navigate the complexities of the autonomous vehicle industry. Iagnemma’s move to a senior strategy advisor role signifies a shift in the company’s leadership structure as it seeks to advance its autonomous driving technology and services.
Laura Major, who has been with the company since its inception, will now take on the additional responsibility of interim CEO. Major’s dual role is a testament to her deep involvement in the company’s core technology and strategic direction.
While Motional has not provided an official reason for Iagnemma’s departure, sources close to the situation have indicated that the transition is amicable. In a statement, Iagnemma expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead Motional and his pride in the team’s achievements in advancing autonomous vehicle technology.
Iagnemma’s journey in the autonomous vehicle industry began with his work at MIT, where he, along with Emilio Frazzoli, participated in the DARPA Urban Challenge in 2007. Their subsequent startup, Nutonomy, became a leader in the field by deploying the first public trial of a self-driving car service in Singapore in 2016. Nutonomy was later acquired by Aptiv for $450 million, which laid the groundwork for the formation of Motional.
Under Iagnemma’s leadership, Motional has made strides toward commercializing autonomous vehicle services, including the planned launch of a robotaxi service. However, the company has also faced financial challenges, with Aptiv announcing it would no longer allocate capital to the project earlier this year. Hyundai stepped in with a $1 billion investment, which included a direct investment and purchasing a stake in Aptiv, securing Motional’s future.
Despite the funding, Motional has had to restructure its operations, resulting in layoffs and the postponement of its commercial robotaxi plans. The company has also paused its operations in Las Vegas and Santa Monica, which included taxi rides and deliveries using autonomous Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles.
As Motional continues to navigate these challenges, the appointment of Laura Major as interim CEO suggests a focus on maintaining the company’s technological advancements and strategic vision. With her extensive experience and commitment to the company’s core mission, Major is poised to guide Motional through its next phase of development.
