Shanghai, China – Qian Jixiang, the founder of Jack Technology, a leading player in the global sewing machine industry, has made a bold statement suggesting that sewing machines could serve as a tool to exert economic pressure on Western countries. Qian’s remarks were made during a recent interview with the 东西智库, a platform dedicated to the high-quality development of China’s manufacturing sector.
According to Qian, the 卡脖子 (literally block the neck) situation is a two-way street, with China’s manufacturing industry facing challenges in basic components while, at the same time, exerting pressure on Western countries through commercial parts. He highlighted that the Chinese sewing machine industry, which accounts for 90% of global production, plays a crucial role in the global garment industry, which serves a massive market of nearly seven to eight billion people.
Jack Technology has become the world’s largest sewing machine company since 2010, with a global market share of around 35%, Qian said. Our revenue is equivalent to that of Japan’s top four sewing machine companies, and most of Japan’s sewing machine production is carried out in China.
Qian further noted that Jack Technology has been acquiring European sewing machine companies over the past decade, with three such companies now under its umbrella. He attributed this to the early adoption of Western technology in the industry, starting in the 1970s. As a result, all the components used in Jack’s sewing machines are domestically produced, eliminating any reliance on foreign enterprises.
The integration of mechanical, control, and chip technology in our sewing machines dates back to the 1980s. In recent years, we have achieved full localization of chips and not only produce sewing machines but also offer comprehensive software and integrated hardware-software solutions, providing equipment for sewing machines to 170 countries worldwide, Qian explained.
He emphasized that the global garment industry is heavily dependent on China’s sewing machine manufacturing capabilities. From Jack Technology’s perspective, while there are still some areas in the equipment manufacturing process that require further breakthroughs, the industry’s global market share in sewing machines ranks among the top ten globally.
From the perspective of China’s manufacturing equipment and products that serve the people’s livelihood, sewing machines are an essential product. They can serve as a tool to exert economic pressure on Western countries, Qian concluded.
The founder’s statement comes at a time when global trade tensions between China and Western countries are rising, with both sides engaged in a high-stakes game of economic brinkmanship. While the suggestion of using sewing machines as a tool to exert economic pressure is a bold one, it underscores the significant role China plays in the global manufacturing landscape.
As China continues to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities and reduce its reliance on foreign technology, the possibility of using its economic power to influence global trade relations cannot be ruled out. However, it remains to be seen how Western countries will respond to such a strategy, and whether it will lead to a new era of economic relations between the two sides.
