The 2024 edition of the iThome CIO Survey series has shed light on the latest trends in emerging technologies within the general manufacturing sector. The report, titled 2024 General Manufacturing Emerging Technology Radar Chart, reveals that several technologies are gaining traction, driven by the post-pandemic surge in IT investments and the push for digital transformation.
IT Modernization and Investment Trends
The survey indicates that IT modernization is a key focus for general manufacturing companies in 2024. This shift is not only driving investments in DevOps but also in cybersecurity and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) transformation. These are considered crucial goals for CIOs in the industry.
Cloud Computing and Platform Engineering
The survey highlights the dominance of multi-cloud and hybrid cloud architectures as the standard for general manufacturing’s IT infrastructure. Amidst the shortage of skilled personnel, low-code development technology has become an essential tool for general manufacturing, driving the adoption of AP (Application Platform) architecture and development.
Carbon Footprint Monitoring and ESG Transformation
Over 50% of general manufacturing companies are expected to complete systematized carbon inventory and carbon footprint monitoring in 2024. This is being facilitated by the adoption of carbon footprint dashboards, which have become a mainstream emerging technology.
AI and Data Technologies
Despite a decline in big data investments, general manufacturing companies remain highly proactive in adopting various data and AI technologies. Popular technologies include ChatGPT-like applications, RPA (Robotic Process Automation), non-generative AI/ML (Machine Learning) applications, and AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things).
Non-generative AI/ML and Generative AI
It’s worth noting that while non-generative AI/ML applications are still the mainstream, their adoption rate has not continued to increase. Instead, Generative AI (GAI) is rapidly catching up, with an adoption rate approaching 10%.
Platform Engineering and FIDO Network Identity Authentication
Two unexpected technologies have gained significant popularity in the general manufacturing sector: platform engineering and FIDO (Fast Identity Online) network identity authentication. Many general manufacturing companies are looking to adopt platform engineering, propelling the technology’s ranking and making it an emerging hit. The application of smart factories and smart IoT has also driven the adoption of FIDO network identity authentication, making it another popular technology.
Technology Radar Chart
The report includes a technology radar chart that categorizes 38 emerging technologies into four groups: IT infrastructure, AP architecture and development, Data and AI, and other emerging technologies. The chart also reflects the popularity changes from 2023 to 2024, with four circles representing different levels: red for hot technologies, yellow for mainstream technologies, green for emerging technologies, and blue for cooling technologies.
Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted from February 15 to March 15, 2024, targeting IT and security department heads from large enterprises in Taiwan, past participants of the CIO survey, government agencies, and universities. A total of 422 organizations participated in the survey, with 71.8% of the respondents being CIOs and 62.8% being the highest security executives in their organizations. The survey covered various industries, with general manufacturing accounting for 17.8% of the respondents.
Conclusion
The 2024 iThome CIO Survey series provides valuable insights into the emerging technologies shaping the general manufacturing sector. As the industry continues to invest in digital transformation, companies are increasingly focusing on technologies that can help them stay competitive and sustainable in the long term.
