Introduction
The iThome 2024 CIO Survey has shed light on the latest trends in emerging technologies within the general manufacturing sector. With the post-pandemic era witnessing a surge in IT investments and digital transformation, the survey reveals significant shifts in technology adoption, focusing on key areas such as IT modernization, DevOps, cybersecurity, and environmental sustainability.
Key Findings
IT Modernization and DevOps
IT modernization remains a top priority for general manufacturing companies, driving investments in DevOps. This trend is expected to continue as businesses seek to streamline their operations and improve efficiency. The survey also highlights the importance of cybersecurity and ESG transformation, which are crucial goals for CIOs in the industry.
Multi-Cloud and Platform Engineering
Multi-cloud and hybrid cloud architectures continue to be the norm in the general manufacturing sector. In light of the ongoing talent shortage, no-code development technologies have become essential tools for businesses, making them the mainstream choice for AP architecture and development.
Carbon Footprint Monitoring
Over half of the general manufacturing companies surveyed are expected to complete systematized carbon inventory and footprint monitoring this year. Carbon footprint dashboards have become a mainstream emerging technology, reflecting the industry’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability.
Data and AI Technologies
Despite a decline in big data investments, the industry remains highly active in adopting various data and AI technologies. ChatGPT-like applications, RAP process automation, non-generative AI/ML applications, and AIoT are among the mainstream technologies. Notably, the adoption rate of non-generative AI/ML applications has plateaued, while generative AI (GAI) technology is rapidly catching up, approaching a 10% adoption rate.
Emerging Technologies
Two emerging technologies have gained significant traction in the general manufacturing sector: platform engineering and FIDO network identity verification. Many companies are looking to adopt platform engineering, propelling its ranking to over five names higher. The application of smart factories and smart IoT has also driven the adoption of FIDO network identity verification, making it another popular technology.
Methodology
The iThome CIO and Cybersecurity Survey was conducted from February 15 to March 15, 2024, targeting IT and cybersecurity executives from large enterprises, past CIO survey enterprises, government agencies, and universities in Taiwan. A total of 422 valid questionnaires were collected, with 71.8% of respondents being CIOs and 62.8% being the highest cybersecurity executives. The survey covered various industries, with general manufacturing accounting for 17.8%, high-tech manufacturing 22.7%, services 23.7%, finance 12.8%, healthcare 13.3%, and government and schools 9.7%.
Conclusion
The 2024 iThome CIO Survey provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of emerging technologies in the general manufacturing sector. As businesses continue to prioritize IT modernization, cybersecurity, and environmental sustainability, the adoption of new technologies such as platform engineering, FIDO network identity verification, and GAI will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry.
