Nanning, Guangxi – A delegation of international and domestic media representatives embarked on a journey to explore the rich cultural heritage of Guangxi Province, visiting the Guangxi Ethnic Culture Museum and the Guangxi Zhuang Brocade Museum in Nanning as part of the 2024 International Media Visiting Western陆海新通道 event.
The delegation, which includes journalists and media professionals from renowned outlets such as Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, CCTV, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times, engaged in various activities to gain a closer understanding of Guangxi’s history, culture, and folk customs.
At the Guangxi Ethnic Culture Museum, the delegation had the opportunity to admire ancient bronze drums and learn about the cultural relics left by the Zhuang people, such as the Baisha Rock Paintings. Thai internet influencer Ma Huizhen, who has visited Shanghai and Shanxi in China, expressed her admiration for the close cultural ties between Thailand and China, and her desire to share her experiences with the Thai audience through video content.
The delegation also visited the Guangxi Zhuang Brocade Museum, where they had the chance to experience the art of making Zhuang-style embroidery balls. Vietnamese journalist Qiao Qingfeng from the Vietnam News Agency’s Cultural and Social Department found the experience of making embroidery balls to be fascinating and a great way to understand the culture of the Zhuang people. She believes that the cultural similarities between Vietnam and China, as well as the geographical proximity of the two countries, make it easier for Zhuang culture to blend with Chinese culture along the border areas, allowing more people to become familiar with it.
After the handcraft experience, the delegation enjoyed a meal at an art-themed restaurant in the Guangxi Zhuang Brocade Museum, which featured local cuisine with elements of intangible cultural heritage. The restaurant’s manager, He Xi, introduced the unique dining experience, which incorporates elements of Zhuang culture through creative ethnic dishes and the display of traditional Zhuang craftsmanship.
In recent years, with the close exchanges between Guangxi and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), traditional Zhuang skills such as brocade weaving have been passed down through cultural and creative products and showcased at international exchanges, gaining recognition from more overseas visitors. The local government has been promoting the construction of intangible cultural heritage projects and developing tourism and related industries, which has helped promote the sales of embroidery balls and Zhuang brocade products both domestically and internationally.
The visit of the international media delegation to Guangxi not only highlights the charm of the Zhuang intangible cultural heritage but also showcases the region’s rich cultural diversity and its commitment to preserving and promoting its unique cultural identity.
