Apple has made a significant shift in its production strategy by commencing the mass production of its premium iPhone Pro models in India. This move marks the first time the tech giant has ventured into manufacturing high-end models outside of China, as the company traditionally assembled its top-tier iPhone Pro series in the Asian nation.
During Apple’s September 10th Autumn Event, the company is set to unveil the new iPhone 16 series. A major change in the production layout this year is the inclusion of India’s factories in the production of the Pro series. However, the iPhone models produced in China and India will not be competing on the same market.
As depicted in the image below, the shift to India signifies Apple’s expansion into new markets and the potential to tap into the burgeoning smartphone manufacturing sector in the region.
According to media reports, the secretary-general of the China-India-Vietnam Electronics (Mobile) Enterprises Association, Yang Shucheng, noted that the yield rate of the Indian factories is approximately 10% lower compared to China and Vietnam, but the overall situation remains within Apple’s manageable range.
Currently, the yield rate of Apple smartphones at Zhengzhou Foxconn exceeds 98%. Based on this, it is inferred that the yield rate of iPhone models produced in India should be over 85%.
Recently, rumors have been circulating that the yield rate of iPhone models produced in India is only 50%. However, this figure pertains to the yield rate of smartphone shells produced by the Indian Tata Group’s factory, not the yield rate of the entire device. Foxconn’s chairman has also refuted these claims.
India, as an emerging smartphone manufacturing hub, has attracted several leading smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, to establish factories in the country.
Currently, the annual assembly volume of iPhone models at Indian factories has reached 30 million units, and plans are in place to further expand production capacity.
This strategic move by Apple to produce iPhone Pro models in India is a testament to the company’s commitment to diversifying its supply chain and expanding its global presence. While the yield rate of the Indian-made models may be slightly lower than those produced in China, the overall quality and performance of the devices are expected to remain consistent with Apple’s high standards.
As the global smartphone market continues to evolve, Apple’s decision to produce iPhone Pro models in India could potentially lead to more cost-effective manufacturing and increased accessibility to the premium segment of the market.
With the Indian smartphone manufacturing sector growing at a rapid pace, Apple’s investment in the region is a significant step towards solidifying its position as a leader in the global smartphone industry.
