Beijing, September 7, 2024 – The China-Cambodia tourism cooperation trilateral exchange mechanism held its first meeting, marking a significant step forward in strengthening tourism ties between the two countries.
The meeting, held virtually on September 6, was jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, and China Tourism Group. Attendees, including Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin, Cambodian Minister of Tourism So Sophorn, and relevant officials from China Tourism Group, reached a consensus to enhance tourism cooperation and encourage more tourists from both nations to visit each other’s countries.
In a statement released by the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia on September 7, it was highlighted that 2024 is the Year of China-Cambodia Cultural Exchange. The embassy expressed its willingness to work with Cambodia to achieve more results in tourism cooperation and cultural exchange.
The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism reported that from January to July 2024, Cambodia welcomed over 460,000 Chinese tourists, a 45% increase compared to the same period last year. China currently ranks as the third-largest source of international tourists for Cambodia.
During the meeting, the parties agreed to focus on promoting aviation connectivity, particularly by encouraging the opening of more direct flights between Cambodia and China. They also discussed leveraging Chinese social media platforms to promote Cambodia’s tourism potential and boost tourist traffic between the two countries.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hang Chuon Naron, expressed his expectations for more Chinese tourists during the 2024 Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund project agreement signing ceremony on September 5. He emphasized that the influx of Chinese tourists would not only boost Cambodia’s economic growth but also foster friendly exchanges between the peoples of the two countries.
