Paris, France – In a recent statement, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo proposed that the Olympic rings will remain displayed on the Eiffel Tower until 2028. The mayor’s suggestion comes amidst ongoing debate over the placement of the Olympic symbol on one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks.
On September 6th, Mayor Hidalgo announced her decision during a press conference, despite facing criticism from some quarters. Despite the criticism that has been directed towards my proposal to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower, I remain steadfast in my support for the idea, but I have set a time limit, she said.
Hidalgo explained that her suggestion is merely a proposal and that she envisions the Olympic rings staying on the Eiffel Tower until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She added, Perhaps after 2028, the Olympic rings will continue to be displayed, or perhaps not. We will have to wait and see.
The Olympic rings were first showcased on the Eiffel Tower on June 7th, exactly 50 days before the opening of the Paris Olympics. In August, Hidalgo claimed that as Paris’s mayor, she had the authority to decide whether the Olympic rings would remain on the Eiffel Tower and had received approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). She expressed her desire to combine the Eiffel Tower with the Olympics and hoped that the Olympic symbol would stay with the tower.
However, Hidalgo’s idea has faced criticism from some Parisians, as well as descendants of the Eiffel Tower’s designer, Gustave Eiffel. Critics argue that the Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris and France, and that permanently adding the Olympic rings, which represent an external organization, is inappropriate.
The Eiffel Tower, which was completed in 1889, has long been an emblem of Paris and a symbol of France’s engineering prowess. The Olympic rings, introduced in 1913, represent the unity of the five continents participating in the Olympic Games.
As the debate over the Olympic rings continues, it highlights the tension between preserving historical landmarks and celebrating global events. While some argue that the rings should remain on the Eiffel Tower as a testament to the city’s hosting of the Olympics, others believe that the landmark should be protected from such modifications.
The decision to retain the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower until 2028 will be closely watched by both Parisians and the international community. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the Olympic rings will become a permanent feature of the iconic landmark or be removed after the Los Angeles Games.
