Typhoon Moko Threatens Southern China, Schools and Businesses ShutDown
HAIKOU, CHINA – Typhoon Moko, classified as a super typhoon, is expected to make landfall in southern China, potentially becoming the strongest storm to hit the region in a decade. The stormhas prompted widespread closures of schools, businesses, and transportation services as authorities prepare for its impact.
As of 6:00 AM on September6th, the center of Typhoon Moko was located approximately 205 kilometers east of Wenchang City, Hainan Province, with maximum sustained winds exceeding 68 meters per second (17 levels on the Beaufort scale). The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued a red typhoon warning, the highest level, indicating the severity of the impending storm.
According to the CMA, Moko is projected to move westward at a speed of 10-15 kilometers per hour, maintaining its intensity. It is expected to make landfall between Qionghai City, Hainan, and Zhanjiang City, Guangdong, between late afternoon and evening on September 6th. The storm is likely to hit the coastal areas between Wenchang City, Hainan, and Leizhou Peninsula, Guangdong, with the strongest winds reaching 60-65 meters per second (17 levels or above).
Following landfall, Moko is expected to move into the Beibu Gulf and make a second landfall in the coastal areas between Fangchenggang City, Guangxi, andnorthern Vietnam, on the afternoon of September 7th. The storm is predicted to weaken rapidly after the second landfall.
In anticipation of the typhoon, authorities in multiple regions have implemented measures to ensure public safety. Schools in affected areas have suspended classes, while businesses and transportation services have been temporarily shut down. Hainan Province has implemented a five-stop-one-close policy, suspending all outdoor construction, outdoor operations, outdoor gatherings, outdoor tourism, and outdoor markets, while closing all coastal tourist attractions.
The CMA has also issued warnings for strong winds and heavy rainfall. From 8:00 AM on September6th to 8:00 AM on September 7th, strong winds of 6-8 levels are expected in most of the South China Sea, southwestern Guangdong, coastal Guangdong, Hainan Island, and coastal Guangxi. Winds of 9-12 levels are forecast for the northern andcentral parts of the South China Sea, the Beibu Gulf, the Qiongzhou Strait, western coastal Guangdong, northern and eastern coastal Hainan Island. The strongest winds, reaching 13-17 levels or above, are expected near the center of the typhoon.
Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in southeasternGuangxi, southwestern Guangdong, and Hainan Island. The CMA predicts large to torrential rain in these areas, with some regions experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. The southwestern coast of Guangdong, the central and northern parts of Hainan Island are expected to experience localized extremely heavy rainfall.
The authorities are urging residents in affected areasto take precautions and follow instructions from local governments. They have advised people to stay indoors, avoid going out during the storm, and secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
