The 2024 Jilin·Guoer罗斯草原 Nadam Festival kicked off on September 1st in Qian郭 County, Songyuan City, Jilin Province, drawing participants and tourists from Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and other regions to experience the rich ethnic culture of the region. The event, themed Drunk with the Beauty of Chagan Hua, Meeting Nadam, showcased the unique charm of the local Mongolian traditions and welcomed a surge in autumn tourism.
A Display of Ethnic Strength and Tradition
The festival opened with a spectacular sight: wrestlers in traditional battle attire showcasing their well-defined muscles, and horsemen galloping swiftly across the grasslands. The Nadam Festival, which means entertainment or game in Mongolian, is a long-standing traditional celebration for the Mongolian people, featuring a grand assembly that highlights草原 civilization and folk customs.
Qian郭 County, the only Mongolian autonomous county in Jilin Province, celebrates its anniversary on September 1st. Starting this year, the county has designated this day to host the Nadam Festival annually. The event not only serves as a platform for professional athletes but also invites visitors to participate in traditional games and sports.
Inclusive Participation and Cultural Exchange
On the opening day, participants engaged in various folk games such as tou布鲁 (a throwing sport) and鹿棋 (a traditional Mongolian board game). Unlike conventional sports competitions, these events were open to both professional athletes and casual visitors who could sign up on the spot.
Gao Erdi, a local Mongolian who lives in the city, decided to join the tou布鲁 competition on a whim. The sport, which originated from hunting, tests the participants’ strength and precision in throwing. Although Gao did not make it to the finals, his excitement was palpable, reflecting the joy of many who participated in the festival.
A Night of Celebration and Entertainment
As night fell, the excitement did not wane. Visitors remained on the grasslands to enjoy ethnic songs and dances such as the Grassland Toasting Song and the Whip Dance, which prompted everyone to dance and cheer together. The night sky was illuminated by a stunning drone performance in the shape of a phoenix soaring and a fireworks display, creating a magical atmosphere.
The festival also offered a taste of local cuisine, with food stalls serving roasted lamb, beef jerky, and other traditional delicacies. An exhibition of intangible cultural heritage and green agricultural products was also set up, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of ethnic clothing.
Economic and Cultural Development
The Qian郭 County authorities aim to seize the opportunity of autumn tourism to promote the integration of sports and tourism. By creating the Culture and Tourism + Sports event IP, they aim to transform and upgrade the Guoer罗斯草原 Nadam Festival. While preserving the traditional elements of the festival, they are expanding its scope and enriching its content to drive economic development and cultural exchanges.
The next day of the festival promised even more excitement with wrestling, archery, and horse riding events, which are the most anticipated competitions of the Nadam.
