On September 1, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Senegalese Foreign Minister Aissata Tall Sall Fall in Beijing. Fall is in China to attend the 2024 China-Africa Cooperation Forum Summit.
Wang Yi began by highlighting the deep historical friendship between China and Senegal, noting that the two countries enjoy a high level of mutual trust and a broad range of shared interests. The traditional friendship between China and Senegal has a long history. As important forces of the ‘Global South,’ China and Senegal have always adhered to independence and sovereignty, walking together on the path of modernization and supporting each other on major issues, steadfastly safeguarding the common interests of developing countries, Wang said.
He expressed China’s willingness to work with Senegal to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership, achieving more new results. We are committed to updating our comprehensive strategic partnership and continuously achieving new outcomes, Wang added.
Wang Yi also spoke about the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), describing it as a brilliant banner of unity between China and Africa and an important platform for South-South cooperation. FOCAC has not only effectively promoted China-Africa relations but has also provided significant momentum for Africa’s own development, he stated.
The Chinese foreign minister praised Senegal for its substantial and effective work as the co-chair of FOCAC for this summit. We appreciate the efforts made by Senegal as the co-chair of FOCAC for this summit and are willing to work closely with Senegal to make this summit another event that strengthens the unity and friendship between China and Africa, igniting a new wave of China-Africa cooperation, Wang said.
He emphasized China’s support for African countries’ legitimate rights to defend their development and revitalization, advocating for a world with equal and orderly multipolarity and inclusive economic globalization. This world cannot have ‘rich countries always rich and poor countries always poor.’ We firmly support African countries in defending their legitimate rights to development and revitalization and are willing to join hands to build an equal and orderly multipolar world and an inclusive global economy, Wang added.
For her part, Foreign Minister Fall described the relationship between Senegal and China as a model of exemplary relations. Senegal-China relations are of exemplary significance. Our countries have always respected each other and jointly promoted international peace and development, she stated.
Fall expressed gratitude for China’s valuable support to Senegal’s economic and social development. She mentioned that President Macky Sall would be visiting China during the summit, which would be his first visit to a country outside of Africa. She looked forward to using this opportunity to deepen the vibrant comprehensive strategic partnership between Senegal and China.
She also highlighted Senegal’s adherence to the One-China policy and expressed the hope for strengthened exchanges in governance and continued support in areas such as transportation, energy, infrastructure, health, and education to help Senegal achieve industrialization and food autonomy.
Fall also spoke highly of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and other global initiatives, which she said demonstrated China’s commitment to multilateralism and support for sustainable development. Senegal attaches great importance to these initiatives and is willing to participate actively, working together for the progress of humanity, she concluded.
The meeting between Wang Yi and Aissata Tall Sall Fall underscores the importance of China-Africa relations and the potential for further cooperation between the two nations. As the 2024 China-Africa Cooperation Forum Summit approaches, the discussions and agreements made during this meeting are likely to set the stage for a new era of China-Africa collaboration.
