Inflation Remains a Top Concern for Americans, Ipsos Poll Finds
WASHINGTON,D.C. – Inflation continues to weigh heavily on Americans, with thecost of living emerging as the most pressing issue for 50% of respondents in a recent Ipsos poll. The survey, conducted amidst persistent concerns about apotential recession, underscores the significant impact of rising prices on consumer sentiment and economic outlook.
The poll, released on August 26, 2024, revealed that Americans are increasingly worried about the cost of living. Ipsos projects that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will have risen over 20% cumulatively since 2020 by the end of the year, with essential items like food seeing a near 28% price surge over the past five years.
Inflation is a key factor holding back consumer confidence, said Chris Jackson, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Ipsos USA. Americans are feeling the strain of high living costs for a long time now. The poll highlights the direct and tangible impact of inflation on everyday expenses, exemplified by the steadily increasing cost of fuel at the pump.
Despite a slight decline in inflation rates, consumer anxieties are on the rise. The poll indicates that prices are soaringfor everything from hot dogs to housing, while wages have failed to keep pace. This disparity is particularly challenging for low- and middle-income Americans, with only 27% of low-income households reporting feeling financially secure in an April survey.
The Federal Reserve’s current benchmark interest rate, maintained at5.25% to 5.5%, adds to the burden for many consumers, driving up the cost of borrowing for major purchases. The cost of living crisis has left many Americans struggling to make ends meet, further exacerbating economic anxieties.
The poll also paints a bleak picture of Americans’ perceptions of theU.S. economy. Over half (56%) believe the current economic situation is poor, with Republicans expressing even greater pessimism at 78%. A majority (63%) also believe the country is on the wrong track.
The Ipsos findings underscore the significant challenges facing the U.S. economyand the deep concerns of American citizens. The persistent inflation and its impact on everyday living are major factors driving economic uncertainty and fueling a sense of pessimism about the future. As the cost of living continues to rise, the pressure on policymakers to address inflation and alleviate the financial strain on American households remains intense.
