Hiroshima Uses Drones to Inspect A-Bomb Dome for Deterioration
HiroshimaCity, Japan – The Hiroshima City government has begun using drones to conduct a comprehensivesurvey of the A-Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for signs of deterioration. This marks the first time the city has fully utilized drones for thispurpose.
The A-Bomb Dome, located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, was built in 1915 and was severely damaged by the shockwave and heat radiation of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Hiroshima City conductsa thorough inspection of the A-Bomb Dome every three years to assess its condition. The survey focuses on elements like the exterior walls and mortar. On August 26th, drones were deployed to meticulously examine the A-Bomb Dome. Flying at a distance of approximately four meters from the structure, the drones captured photographs every two seconds. The thousands of images collected will be used to create a 3D model of the building,allowing for a more detailed analysis of deterioration than traditional visual inspections.
The use of drones offers several advantages over conventional methods. It eliminates the need to erect scaffolding, which can be both time-consuming and disruptive to visitors. Additionally, the detailed 3D model generated from the drone images will provide valuable data for futurepreservation efforts.
By using drones for the survey, it will be easier to leave a digital record of the A-Bomb Dome for future generations, said Makoto Nakada, the head of the Hiroshima City Park Maintenance Division.
