Li Auto Explains Material Choices for L6 Suspension, Emphasizing Strength and Comfort
BEIJING, August 25, 2024– Li Auto, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has addressed concerns regarding the material choices for the suspension system of its latest model, the L6. The companyhas clarified its decision to use aluminum alloy for the upper and lower control arms and steering knuckles of the front suspension, while opting for high-strength steel for therear suspension arms.
Li Auto’s official statement, published on its website and social media platforms, emphasizes that the L6 employs a front double wishbone and rear five-link independent suspension system, a configuration commonly found in luxury mid-to-large SUVs. This setup, according to the company, provides a balance between comfort, handling, and space efficiency.
The decision to utilize aluminum alloy for the front suspension components is driven by the complex shape and larger size ofthese parts. The company argues that aluminum alloy is a more suitable material for these specific components due to its lightweight and formability properties.
However, for the rear suspension arms, Li Auto has chosen high-strength steel, citing its superior structural strength and resilience. The company asserts that the single-plate stamped steelarms, with their U-shaped cavity, offer exceptional strength and durability, even under extreme conditions.
Li Auto further clarifies that the use of steel for the rear suspension arms is not a cost-cutting measure. The company states that steel and aluminum have different strengths and weaknesses, and the choice of material depends onthe specific application. In the case of the L6, the company believes that the simple structure of the rear suspension arms makes steel a more suitable choice, as it allows for a more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing process.
The company also addresses the silver color of the lower control arm in the rear suspension, whichsome have speculated was an attempt to mimic aluminum. Li Auto clarifies that the silver color is due to a zinc-aluminum anti-corrosion coating applied to the steel arm. This coating, according to the company, provides excellent resistance to stone impact and corrosion, ensuring long-term durability and preventing rust formation.
Beyond thematerial choices, Li Auto also highlights other notable features of the L6’s suspension system. The vehicle comes standard with CDC (Continuous Damping Control) shock absorbers, which actively adjust damping force based on road conditions, enhancing comfort and ride quality. The CDC system also offers two modes and six adjustable settings, allowing driversto personalize their driving experience.
Furthermore, the L6 features four hydraulic bushings, two at the front connecting the subframe and two at the rear connecting the body. These hydraulic bushings, compared to traditional rubber bushings, provide a smoother ride by absorbing shocks more effectively and reducing vibrations.
The L6, launched inApril 2024, is powered by a 1.5T four-cylinder range extender, dual electric motors, and a 36.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The vehicle boasts a combined CLTC range of 1390 kilometers and a pure electric range of 212 kilometers.
Li Auto’s detailed explanation of its suspension design choices aims to address public concerns and demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing a high-quality and reliable driving experience. The company’s focus on both comfort and performance through the use of advanced technologies and carefully chosen materials positions the L6 as astrong contender in the growing Chinese electric vehicle market.
