Chinese Electric Tricycles Make a Splash in Central Asian Market
Astana,Kazakhstan – The 19th Kazakhstan-China Commodity Exhibition, heldin Astana from August 23rd to 25th, saw a surge of interest in Chinese-made electric tricycles, known locally as three-wheelers. These compact vehicles, offering a blend of practicality and affordability, are proving to be a hit with Central Asian consumers.
I’ve been looking for an electric tricycle like this, said Tamir, a Kazakh businessman. It’s perfect for transporting both people and goods. In tourist areas, it’s emission-free and quiet. If the price isright, I’ll order one today.
Over 300 companies from various Chinese provinces showcased their products at the exhibition, ranging from agricultural machinery to building materials and household goods. However, the electric tricycles stood out, attractinga steady stream of curious onlookers and potential buyers.
How’s the battery life? Is it durable? Where’s the factory? How long does delivery take? These were just some of the questions buzzing around the electric tricycle booths.
We’ve been incredibly busy, said a representative from Daha Intelligent Technology Company. We’ve had over 20 potential customers in the morning alone, and three have already expressed serious interest in partnering with us. This is our first time exhibiting in Kazakhstan, and the response has exceeded our expectations.
Despite bringing a limited number of models, Daha’s strategywas to focus on customization. Their booth prominently displayed a chart detailing customizable options, from vehicle size and motor wattage to interior accessories and lock types.
We have our own production line and can cater to diverse customer needs, the company representative explained.
Another eye-catching exhibit was a larger, solar-powered electrictricycle.
We have abundant sunshine here, said Ruslan, a Kazakh businessman. This vehicle supposedly runs on solar power. I’m thinking of buying one for my countryside home. It’ll be useful for chores during the summer. Even if it’s a bit pricier, it’sa long-term investment.
Compared to traditional electric tricycles, the solar-powered ones are more expensive due to their advanced electrical systems, explained Xiong Zhuang, Deputy General Manager of Horgos Zhongjin New Energy Technology Company. However, our independent intellectual property, complete domestic supply chain, and ampletechnical talent pool allow us to reduce costs with mass production. We believe this differentiated product, focusing on solar power, will be competitive in the Central Asian market.
While electric tricycles are commonplace in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Cambodia, their presence in Central Asia is relatively limited. Kazakhstan, in particular, experiences long, harsh winters, making tricycles less practical. Xiong Zhuang emphasized that their foray into the Central Asian market was a calculated move.
Competition among Chinese electric tricycle companies is intensifying in mature markets like Southeast Asia and Africa. But in Central Asia, the electric vehicle market is just starting to take off, offeringsignificant growth potential, he said. Our presence in Kazakhstan is not limited to Central Asia; we’re also eyeing neighboring countries like Turkey and Iran. In the future, we might invest in local factories to leverage Central Asia’s strategic location and tax benefits.
The success of Chinese electric tricycles at the Kazakhstan-China Commodity Exhibition highlights their growing appeal in Central Asia. These vehicles offer a practical and affordable solution for transportation and goods delivery, particularly in rural areas and tourist destinations. With their commitment to customization and innovation, Chinese electric tricycle manufacturers are poised to capture a larger share of the Central Asian market, contributing to the region’s economic development and sustainable transportation solutions.
