Gansu Builds an Air Bridge Connecting China to the World
Lanzhou, China – After 1422 days of intense construction, the flight area of the Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport’s Phase III expansion project has been completed and successfully passed flight calibration on June 24th. Ma Jiang, deputy director of the Engineering Department of the project’s on-site command center, highlighted the significance of this development, stating that asa crucial aviation hub in Northwest China, the expansion of Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport will establish an air bridge connecting Gansu to both domestic and international destinations.
The completion of the new T3 terminal building, a key componentof the expansion project, marks a significant milestone in Gansu’s efforts to bridge the gap between itself and the rest of the world. The new terminal, a testament to the province’s ambitious development goals, was showcased during the Amazing Gansu international online communication event, which invited international student experience officers from universities across Gansu to explore the facility.
The T3 terminal boasts a unique design that seamlessly integrates local elements with modern architecture. The transfer center, a highlight of the project, features a distinctive roof structure, combining an outer circular steel structure metal roof with a central pipa-shaped aluminum alloy structure skylight. This design, inspired by the desert Silk Road, symbolizes Gansu’s role as a key link in the Belt and Road Initiative.
The project, designed to accommodate 38 million passengers, 300,000 tons of cargo, and 300,000 aircraft movements by 2030, will significantly enhance Gansu’s civil aviation infrastructure and operational capabilities. The T3 terminal, with its main building + four corridors configuration, evokes the Nine Bends ofthe Yellow River with its gentle curves. Each corridor, ranging from 336 to 422 meters in length, offers 94 parking spaces, including 74 near-gate positions. From above, the terminal’s pipa shape is clearly visible.
The existing T1and T2 terminals at Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport currently handle 8 million passengers annually. However, with passenger traffic exceeding 15 million in 2023, the airport’s capacity has been stretched thin. The airport handles over 450 aircraft takeoffs and landings daily, with a peakperiod seeing an aircraft movement every two minutes. The expansion project, therefore, is crucial to meeting the growing demands of the region’s economic and social development.
The integrated transportation center located directly in front of the terminal building, surrounded by lush greenery, resembles a ruyi (a traditional Chinese scepter symbolizing good fortune), welcoming travelers with a distinct Gansu flavor. Liu Hai, project manager for the China Railway Construction Corporation at the Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport, explained that the airport’s underground infrastructure, 20 meters below ground level, connects to the Lanzhou-Zhangjiakou high-speed railwaylines and reserves space for future subway connections. Eleven meters below ground level, the high-speed rail and reserved subway station hall are located, while a parking garage with 3,520 spaces is situated above ground.
With the completion of the expansion project, Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport will become aseamless integrated transportation hub, connecting air, rail, and metro services, offering travelers convenient, high-quality, and efficient travel options. This new air bridge will not only facilitate economic growth and cultural exchange within Gansu but also strengthen the province’s position as a vital link in the global network, connecting Chinato the world.
