Global Ports Undergo Major Transformation: China’s Shipping Industry Leads the Way

Global PortsFace Reshaping, China’s Shipping Industry Leads the Transformation
Overseas Network, August 23rd – Shipping, the lifeblood of global commoditytrade, is now facing an unprecedented wave of transformation. Digitalization, automation, and green energy transformation have become the keywords for port development. Global ports are activelyseeking change to address the increasingly complex trade environment and the need for sustainable development.
According to Bloomberg, shipping accounts for 80% of global commodity trade. Global ports need an additional €200 billion in investment annually, totaling€2 trillion over the next decade, to complete the digitalization, automation, and green energy transformation.
China’s Shipping Industry Leads the Global Transformation
In the wave of global port reshaping, China’s shipping industryhas demonstrated strong competitiveness and taken a leading position. According to the latest ranking by Lloyd’s List, a global shipping authority, 7 out of the 10 largest container ports in the world are located in China.
Chinese ports have undergone significant changes in recent years. Take Shenzhen Yantian Port as an example. Its new terminal, Xiaomo Port, has seen rapid growth in car export business, exporting 20,000 vehicles in a year. The port is only 25 kilometers away from BYD’s headquarters and production base, meaning new cars only need 5 minutes to travel from the factory tothe port. Jacob Gunter, chief analyst at the Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies, said: “This close collaboration between a company, an industrial park, and a port is a typical example of how Chinese companies operate efficiently.”
Chinese Investment Helps Upgrade South American Ports
In addition to the rapiddevelopment of domestic ports, Chinese investment is also helping to upgrade global ports. The Port of Chancay in Peru is a prime example. This newly built port, funded by Chinese investment, will become the first port on the Pacific coast of South America capable of accommodating large cargo ships.
Carlos Tejada, deputy general managerof the Port of Chancay, said: “(In the past) our agriculture couldn’t reach its full potential because there were no direct routes between South American Pacific coast countries and Asia.” The completion of the Port of Chancay will reshape trade between South America and Asia, bringing new development opportunities for South American countries.
China’s shipping industry’s leading position is not only reflected in its port size and infrastructure construction but also in its active exploration and practice of digitalization, automation, and green energy transformation. China’s shipping industry’s successful experience provides valuable lessons for global port transformation and injects new vitality into globaltrade development.
