Game “3D Sickness”? Experts Offer Tips: Vestibular System “Desensitization” is Key

In recent years, with the rapid development of 3D game technology, moreand more players are immersing themselves in realistic game worlds. However, some players complain of experiencing “3D sickness” while playing games, also known as3D motion sickness or visually induced motion sickness. In this regard, Zeng Xiaoyun, a neurology expert at Wuhan No. 4 Hospital, recently told reporters that this symptom occurs because some people’s vestibular function is overly sensitive, leading to a strong reaction to even slight movements.

Zeng Xiaoyun explained that a person’s sense of balance comes mainly from vision, proprioception, and the vestibular receptors in the inner ear. When the body experiences acceleration, deceleration, or bumps, the vestibular receptors transmit information to the brain, while vision provides environmental information. When the visual information is inconsistent with the vestibular receptor information, it can lead to a disturbance in the sense of balance, resulting in symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

“Simply put, your eyes feel likeyou’re moving, but your body isn’t, causing a loss of balance and dizziness,” said Zeng Xiaoyun.

She also pointed out that staring at a screen for extended periods can lead to eye fatigue, increasing the burden on the brain’s processing of visual information and making it more difficult to coordinate thedifferences between the vestibular system and the visual system, further increasing the likelihood of “3D sickness.” Unlike “3D sickness,” motion sickness from cars or boats is often caused by the acceleration and deceleration during driving, which overexcites the vestibular receptors.

To address “3D sickness” symptoms, some players takemotion sickness medication before playing games. However, Zeng Xiaoyun said that while motion sickness medication is effective in the short term, long-term use can worsen vestibular system dysfunction. She suggests strengthening vestibular stability through exercise, such as practicing vestibular rehabilitation exercises or using a dizziness comprehensive treatment device. Through repeated training, the vestibular systemcan become gradually “desensitized” to stimulation.

Furthermore, Zeng Xiaoyun recommends that players adjust game settings such as the camera angle and frame rate when playing 3D games. Gently swaying the body along with the screen can also help alleviate dizziness. However, it is important to avoid excessive eye strain, takebreaks, and maintain good gaming habits.

Experts advise that if you experience “3D sickness” symptoms, seek medical attention promptly and follow the doctor’s recommendations for treatment.
