News Content:
NASA has provided the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) with a portion of the samples collected from theasteroid Bennu last year, sparking widespread interest in the scientific community. It is hoped that the analysis of these precious samples will yield new scientific discoveries in areas suchas the origin of life on Earth and the birth of the solar system.
Bennu is an asteroid whose orbit lies between Earth and Mars. NASA’s asteroid sample return spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, arrived at Bennuin 2020 and successfully collected 121.6 grams of dust and other samples using its robotic arm. The sample capsule returned to Earth last September, bringing scientists a precious gift from deep space.
Under an agreementbetween NASA and JAXA, JAXA received approximately 0.6 grams of Bennu samples. On August 22, JAXA held a press conference at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, announcing the official receipt of these samples and stating that they will immediately begin work on measuring thedust weight.
It is worth noting that JAXA’s Hayabusa2 probe brought back dust and other samples from the asteroid Ryugu in 2020. By comparing the samples from Ryugu and Bennu, scientists hope to gain more key information about the origin of life on Earth, thebirth of the solar system, and the evolution of asteroids.
JAXA has stated that it will further collaborate with domestic research institutions that participated in the analysis of Ryugu samples to conduct further analysis of the Bennu samples. It is believed that these samples from deep space will unlock more cosmic mysteries for humanity, leadingto new breakthroughs in our understanding of the origin of life on Earth and the evolution of the solar system.
