##欧盟紧急驰援葡萄牙灭火,两架消防飞机飞赴马德拉岛

据欧盟委员会发布的公告,应葡萄牙政府的请求,两架由西班牙增援的消防飞机将于22日晚些时候飞抵马德拉岛,协助当地政府扑灭野火。

**BRUSSELS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua)** – Wildfires on the Portuguese island of Madeira continue to spread, posing a serious threat. The European Commission activated its Civil Protection Mechanism on the evening ofAug. 21, urgently dispatching two firefighting planes to help Portugal extinguish the fires.

According to an announcement released by the European Commission, at therequest of the Portuguese government, two firefighting planes provided by Spain will arrive on Madeira Island later on Aug. 22 to assist the local government in putting out the wildfires.

This urgent deployment of firefighting planes by the EU is another effectiveoperation of its emergency response mechanism. The European Commission’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre is coordinating the rescue operation and maintaining close communication with the Portuguese government to ensure the smooth progress of the rescue efforts.

In addition to deploying firefighting planes, theEU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service (Copernicus EMS) has also been activated, transmitting satellite imagery to Portuguese disaster relief agencies to help assess the fire situation on Madeira Island and provide more accurate decision support for rescue operations.

The European Commission said it will closely monitor the situation on Madeira Island and is ready to provide additionalassistance to Portugal as needed.
