**Keywords:** Thailand, monkeypox, suspected
**Content:**
Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported the country’s first suspected case of monkeypox on August 21st. The suspected patient, a 66-year-oldEuropean male, arrived in Thailand from Africa on August 14th, with a stopover in the Middle East. He developed fever and small bumps on August15th after arriving in Thailand and sought medical attention.
The hospital conducted a test for the Clade 2 variant of monkeypox, which came back negative. A subsequent test for the 1b variant is currently pending. The hospital is using RT-PCR testing with gene extraction to confirm the strain.
While the test results are not yet conclusive, the DDC deemed it necessary to inform the public promptly. The suspected patient is currently in stable condition and hasnot shown any other symptoms or complications.
The DDC’s disease investigation team has contacted 43 close contacts and advised them to self-monitor for 21 days and seek medical attention immediately if they develop any symptoms. As monkeypox can only be transmitted after symptoms appear, quarantine is not necessary as withCOVID-19.
The Thai government is highly prioritizing monkeypox prevention and control measures, including strengthening border quarantine, raising public awareness about monkeypox, and ensuring adequate medical supplies.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus, usually transmitted through contact with infected animals or close contact with infected individuals. In recent years, monkeypox cases have increased globally, raising significant international concern.
The discovery of the first suspected monkeypox case in Thailand serves as a reminder for the public to enhance their vigilance, practice good hygiene, and avoid contact with suspected patients. If experiencing fever, rash, or other symptoms, seek medicalattention promptly.
