##Tesla’s Humanoid Robot “Learns Its Trade” with $48/Hour “Motion Capture” Jobs, Sparking Debate

## Tesla is Hiring “Data Acquisition Operators” to Train Its Optimus Robot, Offering Up to $48/Hour
As the annual World Robot Conference approaches, the field of humanoid robotics is experiencing a new wave of development. Numerous companies worldwide are unveiling new products, and Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot training has also made significant progress.
Tesla is currently recruiting “Data Acquisition Operators,” essentially “motion capture” performers who wear motion capture suits and mimic desired movements to generate vast amounts of training data for the robot. Theposition offers a competitive hourly wage of up to $48, along with cash, stock bonuses, and other benefits.
Tesla has high physical and endurance requirements for its “motion capture” performers. They are expected to walk for over7 hours daily while carrying up to 30 pounds, stand between 170 and 180 cm tall, and wear and operate motion capture suits and VR headsets for extended periods. Additionally, they need to possess sustained hand-eye coordination, body coordination, kinesthetic awareness, and flexibility in scheduling, including day, night, and weekend shifts.
The primary responsibilities of “motion capture” performers include: collecting data by walking designated test routes daily, performing specified actions and operations while wearing motion capture suits and VR headsets, starting/stopping recording equipment, providing equipment performance feedback, analyzing and reporting collected data, and ensuringequipment safety.
Tesla had previously hinted at the nature of this position and has already hired over 50 related employees in the past year. However, industry experts point out that the amount of training data required for robots to perform tasks naturally and efficiently is immense. Animesh Garg, a senior researcher at NVIDIA Research, suggests that the Optimus humanoid robot may need millions of hours of data to be fully prepared for its work in Tesla factories.
This implies a significant cost challenge for Tesla in data acquisition. Animesh Garg believes that the data collection process alone could cost hundreds of millions of dollars, but the ultimate success remains uncertain.
Tesla previously announced plans for small-scale production of truly useful humanoid robots for internal use next year, with hopes for mass production in 2026. However, since the launch of the second-generation Optimus last December, Tesla has not released any major updates. With the recent releases of Boston Dynamics’ new-generation Atlas and Figure’s new-generation Figure 02 humanoid robots, Tesla clearly needs to step up its game.
Tesla’s recruitment of “motion capture” performers for Optimus highlights the potential of motion capture technology in robot training but also exposes the significant challenges in the development of humanoid robots. Whether Teslacan overcome the data acquisition hurdle and ultimately achieve large-scale application of humanoid robots remains to be seen.
