News Title: The “Jiao Long” Submersible Sets Sail to Explore the Western Pacific with First Foreign Scientists on Board

Keywords: Jiao Long submersible, international expedition, foreign scientists

News Content: On August 10, 2024, Qingdao, China, the “Deep Sea No. 1” vessel, carrying the Jiao Long manned submersible, departed from the dock of the National Deep-sea Center under the National Marine Public Service Center, marking the official commencement of the 2024 international expedition in the Western Pacific. This voyage is the first major ocean international sharing expedition under the large-scale scientific program “Digital Typical Habitat of the Deep Sea,” which will feature the participation of foreign scientists in deep-sea scientific research operations for the first time.

A team of scientists from various Chinese research institutions, along with eight foreign scientists from around the world, totaling 60 members, will jointly explore the deep-sea world of the Western Pacific during the 45-day offshore operation. Dr. Andrew, a Spanish scientist, expressed his great honor to collaborate with Chinese researchers and his high expectations for this expedition, particularly in the study of sponge biology, where he hopes to make new progress.

Tang Dongmei, Deputy Director of the China Oceanic Affairs Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources, stated that the large-scale scientific program “Digital Typical Habitat of the Deep Sea” was initiated by China and has received support from institutions in multiple countries and regions. This program is the only large-scale scientific program approved by the United Nations’ “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development,” aiming to enhance scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystems through deep-sea scientific investigations.

Xu Xuewei, Deputy Director of the National Deep-sea Base Management Center, emphasized that the focus of this expedition will be on investigating the deep-sea benthic communities of the typical habitats in the Western Pacific, understanding the composition of deep-sea communities, and further enhancing scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystems, providing scientific basis for the management and protection of deep-sea resources.

The successful launch of this expedition not only showcases China’s international cooperation capability in the field of deep-sea science, but also contributes Chinese wisdom and solutions to global deep-sea scientific research.
