HONG KONG, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The world’s largest floating offshore wind turbine platform, “Mingyang Skymax,” successfully set sail from the Hongjue yard of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company in Guangzhou on Tuesday, under the careful escort of the Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration. The platform, which is equipped with a total installed capacity of 16.6 megawatts, will play a significant role in promoting the development of China’s offshore wind power towards large-scale and deep-sea operations.
The “Mingyang Skymax” is renowned for its unique design featuring two wind turbines and two engines, with two towers arranged in a “V” shape. It is the first floating offshore wind turbine platform in the world to install two towers on a single floating base. With a maximum height of 219 meters and a maximum width of about 369 meters in the air, and a deadweight of approximately 12,250 tons, the platform showcases China’s leading technology in the floating offshore wind power sector.
During the towing process, the Guangzhou Maritime Administration deployed patrol ships and maritime drones for on-site security and escort, and used information technology to remotely control the operation. Additionally, the Guangzhou Vessel Traffic Management Center implemented temporary water traffic control to ensure the smooth departure of the “Mingyang Skymax.”
Upon its official operation, the “Mingyang Skymax” is expected to generate approximately 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the daily power needs of 30,000 households with three members each. The commissioning of this offshore wind turbine platform not only provides technical support for the development of China’s offshore wind power but also has a positive impact on the global offshore wind power industry.
As global energy transformation accelerates, offshore wind power, as a key source of clean energy, is experiencing rapid development. The successful towing and departure of the “Mingyang Skymax” marks a significant step forward for China in the floating offshore wind power sector and is of great importance for promoting the global revolution in clean energy.
