Beijing, August 10 (Xinhua) — “Ta-ta! Charge!” In the women’s 3,000-meter endurance horse race, herder He Fengying guided her horse with a whip; not far away, at the 64-person women’s wrestling arena, 20-year-old Chen Minmin was warming up; 27-year-old San Qir drove 700 kilometers to compete in the archery competition as it was about to start…

On August 9, at the women’s horse archery competition of the 2024 Xing’an League Nadam, the athletes wore elegant attire and demonstrated their expertise.

From August 8 to 12, the “Singing and Traveling in Inner Mongolia, Everyday Nadam” 2024 Xing’an League Nadam was held in the Hegen Grassland of Kedunger Left Banner in Xing’an League of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where “she power” became a stunning sight on the field.

Chen Minmin began participating in children’s wrestling competitions on the grasslands at the age of 15 and started learning Chinese wrestling at 18. Her best achievement was winning the silver medal in the women’s 75-kilogram class of the National Wrestling Championship. She said, “Initially, my family was not very supportive of me practicing wrestling, thinking that girls are weak and prone to injury, but I persisted.”

San Qir said, “I make short videos of my daily training and competitions, and each one now averages around 6,000 to 7,000 views. It feels great to be able to draw attention to this traditional Mongolian sports project.”

At the Nadam, many girls are versatile athletes: Chen Minmin participated in the endurance horse race in addition to wrestling; San Qir competed in wrestling after the archery competition.

Xiu Yun has been serving as a shooting referee for local Nadam competitions since 2018. She was full of praise for the girls. She said, “It’s a mutual pursuit, everyone likes the sport, and our event is well-organized.”

Yu Nai Su, the head of the cultural station in Wulan Mao’s Sumei and the horse racing referee for this competition, introduced that this year’s horse race had more female participants than in previous years. “This Nadam is the largest traditional sports competition within our Xing’an League territory, with the highest number of participants and horses. The youngest female participants are around 12 or 13 years old, and the oldest are around 30.”

Yu Nai Su noted that female athletes have a natural advantage in endurance horse racing due to their lighter weight. He mentioned that the increase in female participants is not only due to their love for the sport but also because of social development and improved living standards, allowing people to pursue their dreams, with family and society providing strong support.

“More and more women are stepping onto the competitive stage, both because of their love for the sport and due to social development and improved living standards, allowing people to pursue their dreams, with family and society providing strong support.” Xiu Yun said.

There are two types of female competitors at the Nadam: one who takes it as a pure hobby, and the other who sees it as a career. Xiu Yun also operates a riding and shooting club in the area, with 40 members, four of whom are female.

“It’s a mutual pursuit, everyone likes the sport, and our event is well-organized.” Yu Nai Su said.

On August 9, the 3,000-meter women’s endurance horse race was in progress at the 2024 Xing’an League Nadam. Bi Lilig took the photos.

The Nadam not only showcased the competitive charm of women but also reflected the inheritance and development of traditional sports in the new era.
