Title: “Chi Lung, China’s Manned Submersible, Launches New Voyage to Investigate Deep-Sea Ecosystems in the Western Pacific”
On August 10, the 2024 Western Pacific International Expedition of the China National Marine Science and Technology Museum set sail from Qingdao, Shandong, marking the commencement of a new round of deep-sea investigation by Chi Lung, China’s manned submersible. This voyage, expected to last 45 days, will focus on investigating the marine mountain ecosystems in the Western Pacific, exploring the biodiversity of deep-sea organisms and their environmental characteristics.
The deep-sea exploration vessel “Yongle”, serving as the mother ship for Chi Lung, was designed by the 708th Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. With a length of 90.2 meters, a beam of 16.8 meters, and a designed displacement of 4,500 tons, it boasts a range of over 12,000 nautical miles, making it an ideal platform for deep-sea research in distant oceans.
During this voyage, Chi Lung will conduct 18 dives to explore the marine mountain areas, collecting biological samples and analyzing their ecological composition. This is not only an important advance in China’s deep-sea research but also the first international cooperation project under the “Digital Typical Habitat of the Deep Sea” large-scale scientific program.
It is noteworthy that Chi Lung will also carry foreign scientists for the first time during this expedition, marking a new step in China’s deep-sea research international cooperation. Chinese scientists will collaborate with 11 foreign scientists from around the world to jointly promote the protection and sustainable utilization of deep-sea biodiversity.
These deep-sea exploration activities not only contribute to a better understanding of the deep sea by humanity but also provide scientific evidence for the sustainable use of global marine resources. With the continuous development of advanced deep-sea equipment such as Chi Lung, China’s influence in the global field of marine scientific research will further increase.
