News Content:
The European Union has stepped up its support to multiple countries facing the spread of wildfires, as summer heat persists across Europe. Countries like Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Greece have been grappling with the rampant wildfires. In response to the dire situation, the EU has promptly mobilized, announcing the deployment of additional planes and firefighters to the affected nations for firefighting assistance.

According to a statement released by the European Commission, on July 15, Bulgaria requested the EU to activate its civil protection mechanism to aid in the firefighting efforts. Subsequently, the EU dispatched 10 planes and 2 helicopters to Bulgaria. As of now, two firefighting planes from Spain are assisting in the firefighting operations in Bulgaria.

On July 30, North Macedonia also turned to the EU for help, seeking the activation of the civil protection mechanism for firefighting support. The EU promptly dispatched 6 planes and 3 helicopters to North Macedonia. Four planes from Germany and Cyprus, along with a helicopter from Slovenia, are currently participating in the firefighting efforts in North Macedonia.

Furthermore, following wildfires in Crete, Greece, the EU activated the “Copernicus Emergency Management Service” to provide Greece with satellite imagery, assisting in the assessment of the fire situation and providing support for disaster relief efforts.

To tackle the summer wildfires, the EU has pre-deployed 28 planes and 4 helicopters, along with 540 firefighters, in 10 member states, ready to assist national civil protection forces.

The increase in wildfires and their intensity in recent years in Europe can be attributed to climate change. These wildfires not only affected Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Greece but also impacted areas in southern Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The swift response and support from the EU indicate its commitment to addressing the wildfire crisis and its support for affected countries. In the face of increasingly severe climate change challenges, the international community must enhance cooperation to jointly confront natural disasters.
