According to the Guangzhou Daily, stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease with varied symptoms, beyond the common manifestations of limb function and language disorders. Changes in cognitive status are also significant signs of stroke. Recently, Mr. Chen, a 70-year-old man, suddenly refused to get out of bed at home and showed symptoms such as sluggishness in reaction and confused speech. His wife, Ms. Liang, noticed the change promptly and took him to the hospital, where he was ultimately diagnosed with acute cerebral infarction.
Dr. Huang Hui, the chief physician of the Cerebrovascular Disease Department at the Interventional Medicine Division of Guangzhou No.1 People’s Hospital, reminds people that while the “BE FAST” or “Stroke 120” mnemonic is commonly used for recognizing stroke, symptoms can vary from person to person. Mr. Chen’s symptoms did not fully match these mnemonics but instead indicated changes in cognitive function, a reminder of the diversity of stroke symptoms. It is advisable to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if anything seems amiss.
Dr. Huang points out that in addition to assessing limb function and clarity of speech, it is crucial to pay close attention to changes in cognitive state. For instance, Ms. Li, aged 72, experienced sudden weakness on the right side of her body and unclear speech in the morning. Her family noticed the change and rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with cerebral infarction. Fortunately, due to timely discovery and prompt medical attention, Ms. Li was treated within the window of opportunity for stroke intervention, successfully revascularized the occluded artery, and her post-operative recovery was good. She was discharged less than a week later, fully recovered.
Dr. Huang emphasizes that time is of the essence in stroke recognition and treatment, urging the use of the “BE FAST” and “Stroke 120” mnemonics for prompt medical attention. He also notes that, in addition to uncontrollable factors, controllable risk factors such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption play a significant role in the development of stroke. Therefore, to prevent stroke, it is essential to adopt a healthy lifestyle and take precautions against heatstroke and excessive heat stress during the “Three Heats” period to minimize damage to cerebral vessels.
