EU Provides €2.4 Million in Aid to Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines for Flood Relief

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) — The European Union (EU) announced on July 30 that it would provide 2.4 million euros in aid to help the people of Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines overcome recent floods.
According to a statement released by the European Commission on the same day, the EU will allocate 1.2 million euros to Bangladesh and India, and another 1.2 million euros to the Philippines to assist affected populations. The funds will be used to provide disaster relief, food, clean water, and sanitation facilities for communities severely hit by the floods.
The statement noted that since May, when Bangladesh was hit by a tropical cyclone and other severe weather events, nearly a third of the country has been affected by flooding. In response, the EU has decided to provide additional aid to Bangladesh, on top of the more than 30 million euros already offered. In the Philippines, the combination of typhoons “Goni” and “Pabuk,” along with southwest monsoon rains, has worsened flooding in the southern part of Mindanao Island. The EU has also decided to provide an additional 1.2 million euros in aid to Mindanao, on top of the 3.1 million euros already given.
Commissioner Janez Lenarčič, responsible for crisis management, stated in the announcement that as the rainy season began this year, the people of Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines faced a severe test. The EU aims to meet the urgent needs of the affected populations by increasing its aid.
The countries in South Asia, including Bangladesh and India, experience the monsoon season from June to September, during which heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, and mudslides are common. The Philippines, located in the western Pacific typhoon belt, typically faces 20 typhoons or tropical storms annually.
The EU’s aid will help the affected areas recover their social and economic order and reduce the impact of the disasters on the lives of local residents. This action also demonstrates the international community’s concern and support for the affected populations.
