**News Content:** Multidisciplinary collaboration is needed to “tailor” the best treatment planfor multiple myeloma diagnosis and treatment

[Shanghai, March 2, China News Network] (Reporter Chen Jing) Osteoporosis, bone pain, anemia, fatigue, vision loss, viral infections… These seemingly common symptoms in the elderly may be caused by a blood tumor—multiple myeloma (MM).

Qiu Lugui, director of the Blood Tumor Integrated Rehabilitation Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, said on the 2nd that multiple myeloma is a malignant tumor originating from plasma cells, which is common in middle-aged and elderly people. Its pathogenesis is complex, involving multiple genetic and environmental factors.

Qiu Lugui pointed out that the clinical manifestations of multiple myeloma are diverse, and the early symptoms are atypical, which can be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed as other diseases. As the disease progresses, patients may experience a series of symptoms such as bone pain, anemia, fatigue, infection, and renal impairment.

“The diagnosis and treatmentof multiple myeloma is a complex process that requires a multidisciplinary team to ‘tailor’ the best treatment plan,” Qiu Lugui emphasized. The multidisciplinary team should include hematologists, orthopedists, radiologists, pathologists, and rehabilitation physicians.

In terms of treatment, Qiu Lugui introduced that great progress has been made in the treatment of multiple myeloma in recent years, including various methods such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation. Among them, the application of targeted therapy and immunotherapy has significantly improved the survival rate and quality of life of patients.

Qiu Lugui reminded that patients with multiple myeloma should follow up regularly and closely monitor the changes in their condition. For high-risk patients, active treatment measures should be taken early to delay disease progression and improve survival rate.

In addition, Qiu Lugui emphasized that patients with multiple myeloma should pay attention to nutritional support, psychological counseling, and rehabilitation exercises during the treatment process. Nutritional support can enhance the patient’s immunity and promote wound healing; psychological counseling can help patients relieve anxiety and depression; rehabilitation exercises can improve the patient’s physical strength and functional status.
