Starting from January 1, 2024, Shanghai and Jiaxing will take the lead in implementing interoperable QR codes for public transportation under the Ministry of Transport, allowing citizens to travel between the two cities without needing to download separate city apps or apply for local ride codes.
This marks an important milestone in the development of public transportation interoperability in the Yangtze River Delta region. Future plans include expanding this service to cities like Hangzhou and Nanjing. The initiative aims to promote regional economic integration and facilitate citizen travel within the Yangtze River Delta.
It is reported that on November 1, 2023, eight departments including transportation management bureaus and big data management bureaus from three provinces and one city in the Yangtze River Delta jointly released the “Yangtze River Delta Transportation Domain ‘One-Code Travel’ Work Plan (2023-2025).” According to the related arrangements, the pilot project of interoperability between Shanghai and some cities such as Suzhou and Jiaxing was launched in 2023.
