Seoul, South Korea – Ukraine will adhere strictly to international law and humanitarian principles in its treatment of North Korean prisoners of war (POWs), according to Dmytro Ponomarenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to South Korea. The ambassador made the statement in a recent written interview with Yonhap News Agency, addressing concerns and speculation surrounding the handling of captured North Korean soldiers amidst the ongoing conflict.

The issue of North Korean involvement in the conflict has been a sensitive one. Reports have suggested the presence of North Korean fighters, allegedly supporting Russian forces. This has led to speculation about the potential implications for South Korea, given its historical ties and ongoing tensions with the North.

Some observers had predicted that Ukraine might leverage the captured North Korean soldiers as a bargaining chip, potentially offering them to South Korea in exchange for military aid or the purchase of South Korean weaponry. However, Ambassador Ponomarenko firmly dismissed this notion.

Ukraine will not use this issue as a ‘bargaining chip’, Ponomarenko stated emphatically, refuting any suggestion of exploiting the POW situation for political or military gain. This declaration underscores Ukraine’s commitment to upholding international norms and ethical considerations in the treatment of prisoners of war, regardless of their origin.

The ambassador further emphasized that constructive dialogue is underway with South Korea regarding the matter. He acknowledged and appreciated South Korea’s contributions to human rights and recognized its diplomatic engagement on the issue. Ukraine values South Korea’s contribution to human rights and recognizes South Korea’s diplomatic intervention on this issue, Ponomarenko said. He assured that the Ukrainian side is acting responsibly in addressing the complex situation.

This assurance from the Ukrainian ambassador comes at a crucial time, as the international community closely monitors the conduct of all parties involved in the conflict. By committing to the humane treatment of North Korean POWs and dismissing any suggestion of political maneuvering, Ukraine is signaling its dedication to upholding international law and maintaining ethical standards amidst the chaos of war.

The situation remains complex and fluid, but Ambassador Ponomarenko’s statement provides clarity on Ukraine’s approach to this sensitive issue, emphasizing a commitment to international law, humanitarian principles, and responsible conduct. Further developments will undoubtedly be closely watched by observers in Seoul and around the world.
