13 UN Member States Condemn North Korea’s ICBM Launch
New York, November 5, 2024 – A coalition of 13 United Nations member states, including South Korea, the United States, and Japan, issued a joint statement on Monday, strongly condemning North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM) launch at the end of October.
The statement, delivered at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, was read by RobertWood, the US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN. Wood emphasized that the launch, like the hundreds of other ballistic missile tests conducted by North Korea since 2022, constitutes a blatant violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
The 13 countries, in their statement, highlighted that the US had submitted a concise summary of North Korea’s missile launch activities and its violation of UN resolutions to the Security Council. However, two council members refused to join the othermembers in condemning North Korea’s actions, prompting the 13 countries to urge all parties to adhere to the binding measures imposed by the UN Security Council.
In addition to South Korea, the United States, and Japan, the statement was also signed by Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg,the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.
The condemnation comes amidst growing international concern over North Korea’s escalating missile program. The recent ICBM launch has been widely seen as a significant escalation, raising fears of a potential nuclear threat.
The statement underscores the international community’s unified stanceagainst North Korea’s provocative actions and its commitment to upholding the UN Security Council resolutions. It also highlights the ongoing challenges in achieving a consensus on how to address North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
