North Korea Fires Multiple Short-Range Ballistic Missiles, Capable of Carrying Nuclear Weapons

Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)has concluded that North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles early this morning, likely demonstrating its capability to launch nuclear attacks against South Korea. The JCS believesthe missiles were 600mm-caliber multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), known as the KN-25, which Pyongyang claims are capable ofcarrying tactical nuclear weapons.

This marks North Korea’s second missile test in five days, following the launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on October 31st, dubbed the Hwasong-19, which is capable of reaching the continental United States.

According to the JCS, the missiles were launched around 7:30 AM local time towards the East Sea. While North Korea typically fires these 600mm MLRSfrom Pyongyang towards the north, this time, the missiles were launched from a mobile transporter erector launcher (TEL) near Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province, towards an uninhabited island near Kilju County, North Hamgyong Province, in the Yellow Sea. The estimated range of the missiles is 400 kilometers.

This means that North Korea has the capability to target key locations in South Korea, including the capital Seoul, with these nuclear-capable missiles. The JCS has condemned the launch, calling it a serious provocation that undermines peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The timing of these launches is significant. They come amidst heightened tensions on the peninsula, with South Korea and the United States conducting joint military exercises in response to North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile capabilities.

The international community is closely watching the situation, with calls for North Korea to cease its provocative actions and engage in dialogue. The United Nations Security Council isexpected to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.
