GM Software Chief Confident in Ditching CarPlay, Android Auto for Deeper Integration
DETROIT – General Motors is doubling down on its decision to phase out Apple CarPlay andGoogle Android Auto in favor of a custom in-car experience built on Android Automotive. In an interview with The Verge, Baris Cetinok, GM’sSenior Vice President responsible for software and services, expressed unwavering confidence in the move.
Cetinok, who previously worked at Apple, joined GM a year ago. He emphasizes that GM is not just a hardware company, but a comprehensive entity encompassing hardware, software, and services. We’re building a car that’s designed to do a whole bunch of things exceptionally well, he said,highlighting the company’s commitment to creating a cohesive and deeply integrated user experience.
He argues that the seamless integration offered by GM’s custom system is crucial for a deep automotive experience. It’s hard to imagine getting into a carand having to switch to a completely different interface to choose a podcast while using driver assistance, Cetinok stated. It’s about the depth of integration.
This move comes as GM prepares for the advent of Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving, which Cetinok believes will require even deeper integrationbetween the car’s systems and the user’s experience. The autonomous driving system needs to be connected to the map to understand where the lanes are, he explained. But if you’re using CarPlay or Android Auto, you’ll find that your map isn’t really connected to the car.
GM’s decision to abandon CarPlay and Android Auto has been met with mixed reactions. While some applaud the company’s commitment to a more integrated experience, others worry about the potential for reduced flexibility and limited app compatibility.
The company’s partnership with Google, however, suggests a strong commitment to providing a robust andfeature-rich platform.
