Busan International Film Festival Kicks Off with a Celebration of Cinema and Remembrance
Busan, SouthKorea – The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF)commenced on October 2nd, 2024, with a vibrant opening ceremony held at the outdoor theater of the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae. The festival, a cornerstone of the Asian film scene, promises a diverse showcase of cinematic artistry from around the world.
The opening ceremony, hosted by actorsAhn Jae-hong and Park Bo-young, featured the premiere of War, Chaos, a highly anticipated Netflix film directed by Park Chan-wook. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Kang Dong-won, Park Jung-min,and Cha Seung-won.
The festival also paid tribute to legendary Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who was honored with the prestigious Asian Filmmaker of the Year award. Kurosawa, known for his haunting andthought-provoking films, received the award in recognition of his significant contributions to the world of cinema.
A poignant moment of the ceremony was the posthumous award of the Korean Film Achievement Award to the late actor Lee Sun-kyun. A tribute video showcasing his career highlights was screened, moving the audience to tears asthey remembered his impactful performances.
This year’s BIFF will feature a diverse selection of 224 films from 63 countries, showcasing the latest and greatest in international cinema.
