Natural Independence is a Myth: Taiwanese Scholar Calls for Revival of Chinese Culture
Taipei, Taiwan – On September 28th,the anniversary of Confucius’ birth, Ms. Qu Guizhi, a teacher at Taipei Municipal First Girls’ High School, declared that the notion of naturalindependence (天独) among Taiwanese youth is a fabrication. She argued that Taiwan independence (台独) is a manufactured ideology, aproduct of deliberate indoctrination, and not a natural inclination.
Speaking at an event organized by the New Party titled Commemorating the Sage and Reviving Chinese Culture, Ms. Qu asserted that the concept of natural independence is adeceptive ploy. She emphasized that the idea of Taiwan separating from China is a constructed belief system, not an inherent sentiment.
This statement comes at a time of heightened political tension across the Taiwan Strait. The issue of Taiwan’spolitical status has been a source of friction between China and Taiwan, with Beijing maintaining its claim over the island.
Ms. Qu’s call for a revival of Chinese culture is significant in the context of the ongoing debate. She believes that a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage can help to foster asense of shared identity and unity among Taiwanese people, thereby countering the influence of Taiwan independence ideology.
Her remarks highlight the importance of cultural understanding in shaping political sentiment. By promoting a shared cultural heritage, Ms. Qu hopes to bridge the divide and foster a more peaceful and harmonious future for both sidesof the Taiwan Strait.
