KDE,the popular desktop environment for Linux, is making significant progress in supporting High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays, paving the way for a more immersive and visually stunning gaming experience on the platform. This advancement comes thanks to ongoing efforts by KDE developer Xaver Hugl, who has been diligently working on improving HDR and color management within the KWin compositor, as well as enhancing integration with Valve’s Gamescope compositor.

One of the key improvements in Plasma 6.1 is the enhanced SDR brightness slider. This feature, previously introduced in Plasma 6.0, now offers a more robust and user-friendly experience, similar to adjusting brightness on laptops andother displays. This allows users to fine-tune the brightness of their SDR content when connected to an HDR display, ensuring optimal viewing comfort.

Plasma 6.1 also introduces support for using the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID)as the monitor’s color profile. This means the system can now automatically leverage the color information embedded within the display itself, resulting in more accurate and vibrant colors.

On the Gamescope front, a new backend has been developed that allows using Wayland subsurfaces to forward content to the host compositor. Thiseliminates the need for Gamescope to handle all compositing tasks, resulting in a more efficient process and allowing HDR content to be passed directly to KWin. This new backend also reduces image copies, further enhancing performance.

While the current recommendation for HDR gaming on Linux is to use AMD Radeon graphics with the Linux6.8 kernel or newer, these advancements in KDE and Gamescope represent a significant step towards a more seamless and enjoyable HDR experience for Linux gamers.

The progress in HDR support is not limited to KDE. Next week, developers will gather at the Igalia offices in Spain for the Display Next Hackfest, wherethey will continue exploring HDR advancements alongside other key areas like Wayland enhancements, color management, VRR/frame timing, and content-adaptive scaling/sharpening.

This concerted effort by KDE, Gamescope, and the broader Linux community demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering a superior gaming experience on the platform. With theseadvancements, Linux gaming is poised to become even more immersive and visually stunning, offering a compelling alternative for gamers seeking a powerful and customizable operating system.
