South Korean Ambassador to Japan Visits Fukushima Nuclear Plant, Urges Safety Assurance forWastewater Discharge

Tokyo, September 26, 2024 – TheSouth Korean Embassy in Japan announced today that Ambassador Park Cheol-hee visited the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, conveying Seoul’s stance on the ongoing discharge oftreated radioactive water from the facility. Ambassador Park emphasized that Japan must ensure the safety of the discharge process according to international standards and maintain transparency in information sharing.

During the visit, Ambassador Park received a briefing from Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) on the wastewater discharge procedures and the decommissioning process of the affected reactors. He acknowledged the Japanese government’s decision on September 20th to expand theInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring mechanism for Fukushima wastewater as a step towards greater transparency. South Korea, he stated, will actively participate in this expanded monitoring effort.

TEPCO initiated the ninth discharge of treated radioactive water from the Fukushimaplant today, a process expected to continue until October 13th.

The South Korean government has consistently expressed concerns about the potential environmental impact of the wastewater discharge, demanding stringent safety measures and transparent communication from Japan. This visit by Ambassador Park underscores Seoul’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the discharge process and itswillingness to engage in international monitoring efforts.
